Clive Hornby

Clive Hornby as Jack Sugden in 1983.

I am saddened to hear of the death of actor Clive Hornby, Jack Sugden in Emmerdale Farm.

Mr Hornby was the second actor to play Jack and first appeared in the role on 19 February 1980.

Down to earth Jack was much-loved, Mr Hornby stamped his own warm and natural acting style on the character, which had formerly been portrayed as a bit of an outsider and trendy bohemian in the show's early days.

My sympathies to Mr Hornby's family.

As a tribute to Clive Hornby, I am declaring August at Back To Beckindale "1980 Month". We shall then return to the year of Mr Hornby's debut in Beckindale to look at the events and characters of the time - including, of course, the return of Jack Sugden.

I was brought up on Emmerdale and I'm absolutely shocked by this news. Clive was a wonderful man and a terrific actor and Emmerdale will be a sad place without him.

My thoughts go out to his family & friends at this very sad time!

I've watched Clive as Jack since he first appeared in 1980. It's not the same show now, hasn't been for some years, but Clive was a nice constant. I don't know if I shall continue to watch now. The old farm days are getting further and further away.

I still can't believe it. 63 is far too young. Jack often brought a touch of sanity to Emmerdale. I've actually found myself crying over Clive's death.
