Remember This Is Emmerdale Farm In The 1980s - Not Emmerdale In 2009!

I've just had a somewhat perturbed e-mail from Mel asking why there is no material about Charlie Hardwick on this blog? The answer, Mel, is revealed in the blog's header - the subject is Emmerdale Farm in the 1980s, when Amos Brearly (Ronald Magill) and Henry Wilks (Arthur Pentelow) owned The Woolpack, not Emmerdale today!

There's plenty of on-line stuff about Emmerdale if you take a look around the Web.

Just a quick question during the whole of the 1980's did Mr Wilks live at the Woolpack along side Amos all the time or did he have his own house.

Mr Wilks lived at The Woolpack with Amos throughout the 1980s.

A nice DVD boxset of Emmerdale Farm landmark episodes of the 1980's really needs to bought out just like the Crossroads and coronation street DVDs do Yorkshire television still have
all the Emmerdale farm classic episodes in their archive I wonder its funny why no classic 80's epiosdes have as yet not been bougth out on DVD its a shame.

I've been watching lots of '80s episodes and they are great! Such happy memories!

are nice hope you don't mind me asking Andy but how do you get hold of classic 80's
episodes.

They were taped from the Sky Soap repeats years ago. They're put to good use here!

I've heard Network are not considering releasing anymore Emmerdale Farm/Emmerdale episodes. Can anyone confirm this is true?

Magnus, an old friend of this blog, has reported communication from Network to the effect that the 1970s episodes did not sell well, so it seems it probably is.

On the same theme, apparently Network have also had similar difficulties in selling recent 1970s editions of the Crossroads soap opera releases.

The real 1970s are never as popular as the fake hype!

A lot of people on 'Digital Spy' at the time they released Volume 1 thought that 1972 episodes were too dated - I enjoyed them just as much as recent episodes and it's no more dated than other YTV shows at the time like Follyfoot, etc.

I thoroughly enjoyed the 1972 Emmerdale Farm episodes. But not "Follyfoot".

"Recent episodes" of WHAT? The reason the 1972 episodes didn't sell was because Emmerdale Farm was a completely different programme to Emmerdale and today's blood thirsty, scandal-seeking audiences are not interested in a gentle tale of country life.

I think the '80s episodes may have had a better chance as DVD releases, Andy - particularly if they featured Clive Hornby's first appearance, Richard Thorp's first appearance, Christopher Chittell's first appearance, etc.

Coronation Street is a "different" show now to what it was when it first started, shouldn't we separate the "old and new" with that one too. The programme has "evolved and expanded" as opposed to being a "new show". Fair enough if you don't watch it, but it's still a 37 year old show whether you watch it or not. It's like life itself, things change and move on. I'm different now to what I was 10 years ago, should I therefore class myself as being 10?

Most Yorkshire villages are no longer insular rural communities anymore. The world has moved on.

No, that's right. They're full of murderers and evil doers and young men with improbable biceps.

But have you dropped your second name (as Emmerdale Farm dropped its second name) and totally changed your character? No, I don't believe that and I don't believe that Emmerdale Farm was anything like Emmerdale.

This is all off-topic and getting a little heated. Calm down, folks - this is an Emmerdale Farm 1980s blog - not a debating board for the merits and otherwise of Emmerdale Farm and Emmerdale.

Well we certainly don't live in La La Land where everyone loves everyone and bad things don't happen. Anyway you've just as good as described my neck of the woods.

Where do you live then - Fantasy Island? Full of people who seem to be second rate actors, with improbable lives, resembling poorly thought-out 21st Century soap storylines?

ENOUGH! I'm calling "TIME!" on this thread. It's Friday afternoon, the sun is shining... relax and enjoy the weekend!

OK, Andy. Loving the blog by the way.

People get so heated over a bit of soap! Crazy!

Soap can be a passion, Anon!

Bryan Higgins: BTW Andy, you got your computer re-organised yet?

Drew said...

No - it'll be a month or two yet. I'll let you know!
