Emmerdale Farm Vol 2 - A New DVD Set On The Way!

Thanks to everybody who has informed me that Emmerdale Farm Vol 2 is on the way! It's been a long wait!

I urge all fans of vintage soaps to buy a copy - it will be a fascinating glimpse into the past and a must-have for all fans of Emmerdale Farm.

This volume will hark back to the soap's lunchtime days, but to all fans who have asked me about 1980s episodes, the best way to ensure that they are officially released is to buy the earlier stuff.

And for those who proclaim the show in its first few years "slow" and "boring", I think you will be very pleasantly surprised by what was, in reality, a thought provoking serial with moments of great drama.

The release date is 24 August.

UPDATE: The release date is now 14 September.

I bought Volume 1 and found it boring. I want the Clive Hornby era, but at this rate it will take ten years to reach 1980! I will not be buying this.

No disrespect to fans of Emmerdale Farm from '72 to '89, but it WASN'T Emmerdale. And this won't sell well. No Pollard. No King family. No Diane. Just a load of 60s hippies and old fogies in a kitchen. It's a bore. We want classic EMMERDALE not EMMERDALE FARM.

It IS kind of 60s... but Jack, the hero, was a 60s youth. I found Vol One really good and I'm buying volume 2 - the show was getting gritty and murdurous in 1973 and it was on in the afternoon. Just shows how TV was going back then.

lol - downhill rapidly!

I've read that it's taken almost two years for the Volume One to clear enough sales to justify a second. Don't go holding your breath for a third.

I want to see Alan Turner's early years, and Pollard's debut. And I'm not buying all this old crap simply to get to see them.

This is FABULOUS NEWS! We've waited so long... And now, finally...

It's made my evening.

I hope they can hurry these up and get to Emmerdale in the 1990s. Emmerdale Farm was boring, but I'd love to see all the Emmerdale episodes from the plane crash up to date.

Yay for 90s Emmerdale - the decade when Dynasty's Alexis came to the Dales in the shape of the divine Kim Tate!! DROOL!

Are you kidding? The 1972-1989 episodes were far better. It's just a shame these dvds are coming out at such a slow rate. I would love to see Clive Hornby as Jack and Alan Turner, Caroline Bates, Eric Pollardand Archie Brooks make their debuts.

I recently saw some Richard Handford eps. He really cranked up the pace, didn't he?

Kim came to Emmerdale in late 1989, not in the '90s.

Cerys - yes, I'm studying Mr Handford's era (1983-1986) and it's fair to say scenes were growing shorter and storylines were getting faster.

A few corrections - Eric Pollard made his debut in 1986. No King Family? No Diane? Diane didn't appear until 2000, and Kings didn't appear until 2004, so it's like you're saying 1989-1999 didn't matter.

You say Emmerdale Farm was boring and would love to see episodes from the plane crash to date. When that happened it hadn't been Emmerdale "Farm" for over 4 years. And there hasn't been a plane crash this week, or even this year, so what's attracting you to the show now?

No I'm not. I didn't know Pollard was 1986. So, Emmerdale Farm was actually a bore from 1972 to 1986. OK?

Well that's a matter of opinion mate? A lot of misconception of the show in it's early years was down to the way the press marketed it. They would have you believe it was just half an hour of sheepdipping. Most people who criticised the show back then probably didn't even watch it.

And the fact that two of the largest ITV regions had relegated it to teatime viewing until the late 1980s. Out of sight, out of mind.

When did Jean Rogers arrive?

Jean debuted in 1980.

If "Vol2" means Season two I am more than happy! I liked vol 1 a lot

Drew said...

I'm hoping that's just what it means, Magnus! I much prefer following a serial through than watching specially selected episodes from different eras.

I bought volume 1 thinking it would be like Emmerdale and it wasn't. It was a slow, old woman's type of programme. The acting was OK, but a couple of the accents were lousy. I nodded off over it and won't be buying the next one. It needs Eric Pollard to make it work. He's the best thing that ever happened to Emmerdale Village.

Drew said...

I'm sure Eric would agree with you!

I'm really looking forward to the latest DVD release... the memories come flooding back... thoughts of Alison Gibbons (a character that passed through back then) remind me of sitting watching the show with my mother and drinking bowls of minestrone soup (powdered packet stuff) with bits of horrible hard "vegetable" in it.

Bryan commented: "It says there's 26 episodes on the cover. I thought season 2 had more episodes than season 1."

Yes, I thought so too, Bryan. But twenty-six is probably just the number of episodes Network will feature on each package.

Anonymous said...

I'm not complaining Andy, 26 is quite a lot to be going on with. I still can't believe it's taken them nearly 2 years to get volume 2 out.

Drew said...

I'm told the lengthy gap between DVD releases is down to slow sales of Vol 1. I really hope Vol 2 will do well. Of course its got an early appearances of Louise Jamieson from Dr Who and that '80s detective thingy, so that might arouse more interest.

People should give it a chance. And to all those who write in here wanting Eric Pollard, Clive Hornby as Jack Sugden, or Kim Tate episodes, the best way of getting the '80s era released on DVD is to buy the earlier stuff. And I really do think you will be pleasantly surprised.

How do you think a decade box-set would have sold? Like the Coronation Street ones.

Drew said...

What, 72-79, 80-89, 90-99, that sort of thing? Well, I'm not terribly keen on the notion. Soaps hook us at the end of each of episode and I like to follow the stories through. But I think the Corrie versions were popular so some Emmerdale Decades boxsets might have done very well indeed.

Anonymous said...

If it's based on a particular storyline, I like the few episodes before, the actual storyline and the few following episodes, because then you've got the build-up, the conclusion and the aftermath. A lot better to watch than just odd episodes which are months apart I think.

Drew said...

Yes, that is better. But I've been pigging out on most of the episodes from 1980-1987 and it's such a pleasure to follow it all through that I'd like to see Network providing the same opportunity. Mind you, Crossroads sales have flagged, and that was the system operated there.

Does anyone have any news about Emmerdale farm volume 3 or if there is going to be anymore volumes?.

As vol 4 is now released, I hope they continue. I loved the early years of Emmerdale Farm. They could do with an airing on a tv channel.

Really?? I'll check it out, sounds really good. 60s hippies, drama that breathes... better that that dross they put on after the ITV news lol
