Beckindale boys Archie Brooks (Tony Pitts) and Nick Bates (Cy Chadwick) enjoy fags and beer in 1987.
Anne has written:
Don't you think that the 1980s men of Emmerdale were less attractive than today? I think the show was seriously lacking in male tottie back then. Clive Hornby and Ian Sharrock were OK, but where was the muscle? There was nobody to compare to the delicious John Barton now.
Times change, Anne! I don't think there was as much muscle around in general before the 1990s.
I recall the fitness craze of the 1980s, aerobics and so on, and loads of people got into wearing sweat bands.
And, of course, the designer trainer arrived. I remember them well. They were great for nipping over to Sainsbury's for fags and Stella Artois.
The 1980s Emmerdale Farm episodes saw Alan Turner arriving - and he was at his most dashing.
And Al Dixon's Walter enjoying his five year reign.
And Amos Brearly being at his glorious pottiest.
And Archie Brooks plodding in with his ghetto blaster, slow wit, and anarchic views.
With those classic characters around, who needed loads of muscle?
