Just for fun, can you tell me who the two men pictured above are? Both would make their mark on Beckindale many years after the photographs were taken...

Just Beckindale? Not Emmerdale? Would answering that give too much away? :)
Here's a clue, t'witch: one of the men made his mark on Beckindale - and on Emmerdale Farm in particular; the other was seen far more in Beckindale village only!
I have seen the picture of the man fingering his instrument before somewhere but I haven't a clue who it is. The other on in the flowery shirt has a look of Robert Sugden, which doesn't help at all!
Not Seth Armstrong, but yes, Mary, the man on the right is comedian Al Dixon - the photograph was taken around 1945. Al became Woolpack Walter in September 1980.
Well done. Now if you can just solve the mystery of the man on the left...
No, not Duncan Preston, Mary. And, t'witch, the character made his mark on Emmerdale Farm, the programme in general, and was closely linked to the farm in the story-line.

The one on the right isn't Jack (clive Hornby) is it?
In his Cavern days?
No, sorry. But you are familiar with the character, t'witch! :)

I'm dying to tell you - but I won't...
Andy Devine
Nope, sorry, Mary!
Are the black and white pictures or have you made them look older than they are to dupe us ;)
They're the original colours, Mary - well, as much as my wonky old scanner will allow!:)
The one on the right - the eyes are very like Anthony Audenshaw, but he doesn't have enough hair.
Is one of them woolpack walter ?
And seth Armstrong
Not Anthony Audenshaw, t'witch... can you indicate which man you think is Woolpack Walter, Mary?
on the right ?

So are we familiar with him?
Definitely!
So he's the one who made his mark on Emmerdale Farm in particular?
Emmerdale Farm the farm, or Emmerdale Farm the programme in general?
ok a stab at Duncan Preston

Tony Melody ?
No, not him! :)
I don't really know a lot of the 80s people, but a stab in the dark, and it doesn't look like pictures I've seen, but it's not Annie's father is it?
Absolutely correct, t'witch - it is Toke Townley, who played Sam Pearson in the series, from 1972 to 1984.
Oh! He'd put on a bit of weight by the time I saw him then And he definitely doesn't have farmer's hands there. :)
Oh it´s Sam Pearson! To the left!
I recognised their faces straight away. Sam and Walter.
